What to Do After Receiving Your Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia Milii)

Unpack Euphorbia milii after receiving

Caution!! Handle With Care Euphorbia Milii has sharp spikes along the stem. When unpacking, handle the plant gently and carefully. Take your time.

Step 1 — Unpack the Plant

Open the box and carefully take the plant out of the paper wrap. Be gentle with the stems.

You may notice some white coating on parts of the plant. This is normal, before shipping, all plants are treated with pesticide and fungicide to keep them healthy during transit. It will not harm the plant.

Step 2 — Rinse With Water

Once unpacked, give the plant a gentle rinse with water. You can spray or run water over it, then let it sit in a small amount of water for a few minutes.

This helps the plant rehydrate after the long journey. Many of our customers say this step makes the plant look fresh and perk up much faster. It’s like it is getting a drink after a long trip.

Step 3 — Pot the Plant

Pot the plant as soon as you can after it arrives. The sooner it gets into soil the better.

  • Soil : Use well-draining soil. Crown of Thorns does not like to sit in wet soil. Many of our customers in the US use cactus potting mix and it works very well. Any well-draining mix will do.

  • Light : For the first week, place the plant in partial shade or indirect sunlight. This gives it time to adjust without added stress. Once you start to see new leaves coming in, you can move it to a spot with more sun. Crown of Thorns needs good sun to flower well.

  • Water : For the first 2-3 days, you can water daily. After that, adjust based on your local environment. Avoid overwatering, Crown of Thorns does not like too much water and sitting in wet soil can cause root rot.

  • Fertilizer : Do NOT add any fertilizer right after potting. Wait until the plant has grown a few new leaves and is clearly settled in before you start fertilizing.
