Microsorum pteropus commonly known as a water fern has found along streams, marshes and bogs in Thailand also Southeast Asia countries. An individual plants of Microsorum pteropus can reach a height 15-30 cm. These Java fern are including the “narrow leaf” Java fern, the “needle leaf” Java fern, the “Windelov” Java fern and the “lance leaf” Java fern. Cultivation in the aquarium is not problematic as long as the rhizome is tied to rock or driftwood and not planted directly into the substrate. Easy to propagate by splitting the horizontal rhizome. A hardy plant which grows in all conditions.
Microsorum pteropus is one of the easy to grow aquarium plant known to the hobby. It does well in a low or high range of water conditions and lighting intensities. It’s slow growth makes the leaves prone to developing Black beard Algae if there is too much light and inadequate dissolved carbon dioxide. Microsorum pteropus is a wonderfully adaptive plant for an aquascaper. It can be placed anywhere in the aquarium foreground, midground or even background areas. Aquascapers tend to attach Microsorum pteropus on driftwood and rock using thread, rubber bands, and fishing line.
