How to Help Your Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) Bloom More Flowers
Crown of Thorns, also known as Euphorbia milii, is one of the easiest flowering plants to grow. But sometimes, it just grows leaves, not flowers. If that’s happening, don’t worry.
Here are a few simple things you can do to help your Crown of Thorns give more flowers.
1. Remove Old Flowers
Once flowers have bloomed and start to fade, they won’t look as fresh or bright anymore. It’s a good idea to get rid of them(I know it sounds harsh). But this helps the plant focus its energy on making new flowers instead of keeping the old ones alive. Just simply use your hand to pick that off the stem. Make sure you get the whole stem out, not just the petals.
2. Make Sure It Gets Enough Sunlight
Crown of Thorns loves sunlight. If it doesn’t get enough, it will grow lots of leaves but very few flowers or none at all. Place the plant where it gets at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
3. Use the Right Soil
This plant doesn’t like wet soil. Use well-draining soil, something sand, coconut peat mix, cactus mix is perfect. Avoid dense or muddy soil that holds too much water. If your plant has been in the same pot for a long time, and the soil looks packed or soggy, it might be time to repot it with new soil.
4. Fertilize Every Few Months
While fertilizer isn’t required, it can really help boost flowering. In our garden, we use a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote every 2–3 months. It gives the plant a steady supply of nutrients without needing to feed it too often.
